As well as any Apps that access small files. So in any case, for larger files, it'd still be good, but many games that constantly access small files, you might see a bit of a performance hit. Most likely you'd see the Internal HDD cap out around 30MB/s-40MB/s, and I'm not sure about the USB 3.0 HDD, but it would be higher than that. The speed of the HDD would never touch the max cap of SATA ll, nor would the USB 3.0 HDD touch the max cap of USB 3.0. Those are of course theoretical results, on paper. So, the Internal HDD would take about ~2.69 Seconds total, and the External HDD would take about ~1.63 Seconds total. On the other hand, if you access larger files, as I said, 1GB+, the Internal HDD will access it faster (15ms), but will take longer to read it (~2.67 Seconds), than the External HDD, which will take about (~1.60 seconds) to read it. With 1,000 files, you would see a 15 second difference between the two. Of course, those are not very big speed differences, but this would vary greatly once you are talking 100s or 1000s of files being accessed.

The External HDD will take (10 x 0.030) seconds to access, and (10 x 1) seconds to read, which is 10.30 seconds. This will take the Internal HDD (10 x 0.015) seconds to access, and (10 x 1) seconds to read, which of course ends up being 10.15 Seconds. The External HDD will read it just as fast, however, will take twice as long (30ms instead of 15ms) to access it. So at those speeds, if you are accessing a bunch of files that are under 375MB/s, then the Internal HDD will be theoretically 2x faster, since it can access the file twice as fast, and be done reading it in a second (or less). Say your Internal HDD is reading at the max Sata ll speed of 375MB/s, and has an access time of 15ms, and your External HDD is reading at the max USB 3.0 speed of 625MB/s, and has an access time of 30ms. On the other hand, if there are a bunch of small files to access, then the Internal HDD would win, because it would be able to access them faster, and since they are so small, they would take the same amount of time to read on each drive. For instance, accessing 1GB+ files, it would be better than the internal HDD, because once it accesses the file, then it'd be down to speed, so though the Internal HDD would access the file faster, it's so large, that the External HDD would catch up, and in most cases probably surpass the Internal HDD that is reading it at a slower speed. So, for larger files, it would still be good. For instance, USB 3.0 has a max transfer rate of 625MB/s, but this doesn't relate to access speed. Doesn't have as much to do with the bandwidth. It's the time it takes to access the file. Most of the things people bitch about just need to be seen in person and then users can decided for themselves if it's something they like or want to support. I've seen demos and they have some really impressive server technologies that adapt really well to the latency issue.Įither way, people are way to caught up in arbitrary numbers, when the real world usage is what's important. I'm also interested to see what MS has in store. That'd be a great feature to have in the PS4. I think PlayStation users should be more excited about the rumor of PS1/PS2 local emulation. The local gameplay is just so much better. Still, it's not a bad service by any means, but I don't think I'd go out of the way to pay for something like PS Now instead of just using a PS3. It's really just the latency of the internet and tech companies finding the right work around to make it more viable. Personally, I used Remote Play/PS Now streaming and found the latency and other aspects to not be there yet. Everyone should just find out for themselves. It doesn't matter what people say really.
